of rain just this evening in san rafael and santa rosa. we'll talk about which tiny part of the weekend will stay dry coming up. >> thank you. you can find cbs 5 high-def doppler radar online. you can track storms in your neighborhood anytime of the day at cbssf.com/weather. a watch with toggle switches and wires suspicious clothing, no checked baggage. it all led to a security scare at oakland international airport. as mark sayre tells us, the fbi is taking it serious. >> reporter: they are in charge of the investigation and alameda county sheriff's deputies say there is no question that what they found is potentially very dangerous. the incident occurred here at the terminal 2 security checkpoint at the oakland international airport. authorities say 49-year-old jeffrey mcgann a 49-year-old resident of rancho palos verdes was trying to board a home to l.a.x. when attempted to pass through

the security checkpoint with a suspicious watch. >> the watch had on it a toggle switch, a series of fuses, series of wires protruding from it, a circuit board, and the watch itself, which was on incorrect time. >> reporter: it wasn't just the watch that drew the attention of authorities. it was also mcgann's overall behavior and an unusual alteration to his boots. >> they also had what appeared to be a homemade cavity in there. and he was very evasive on everything that he was doing. >> reporter: while no actual explosives were found on mcgann, nor in his luggage, authorities say there's no question he was carrying potentially dangerous materials. >> as a triggering device, absolutely. absolutely. obviously he was missing a couple of things along the way. >> reporter: passengers were alarmed to hear of the security

scare but say they have confidence in their overall security at the airport. >> everything is considered suspicious now. >> reporter: at this time no motive. mr. mcgann told them apparently that the watch as a piece of art. he apparently has ties to the art community. he is held at the santa rita jail. mark sayre, cbs 5. a 65-year-old vallejo woman is recovering after being kidnapped and sexually assaulted. the suspect is a 14-year-old boy. the woman was forced into her minivan at gunpoint in front of a store on plaza drive. she was later found duct taped in a ditch along hiddenbrooke parkway. police say the boy forced the woman to drive her minivan a few miles then made her stop, where he beater and sexually assaulted her. the teenager took off in the van. people walking by found her. passersby summoned aid for

her, were kind enough to take good care of her and get her treatment. they also provided information to the police which ultimately assisted us in making the arrest. >> as police gathered those clues, they say the teenager called a family member of the woman and demanded a ransom. he was then arrested back at the same shopping center where the kidnapping took place. police are not releasing the 14- year-old's name but say he had past run-ins with the law. >> it's not something you expect from someone sworn to uphold the law. the san francisco sheriff's deputy seen in a youtube video is under arrest accused of robbing a bank. as don knapp tells us authorities are tight-lipped. >> reporter: police say they have a man in custody but apparently the person who robbed this bank was wearing a black hat, dark sunglasses and a black hooded sweatshirt. but he apparently did not conceal his fingerprints on a

demand note and now they say they have a sheriff's deputy in custody. it was the day after election day. a man walked into this branch of the bank of america on balboa street, 3700 block, left a demand note, asking for money, left with about $1,700 in cash. but there was a surveillance camera that got his picture. now the district attorney says they know who it is and they compared photographs to the picture on the surveillance video and they came one a deputy sheriff and they now have him in custody $150,000 bail. and looks like he's in trouble. >> back to you. >> thank you. we'll be right back. ,,,,

petraeus told members of congress today in a closed hearing. pet new details about what former cia director david petraeus told members of congress today in a closed hearing. petraeus offered a new explanation for why some references to terror groups suspected in the benghazi attacks were initially downplayed. cbs reporter danielle nottingham has details. reporter: former cia director david petraeus avoided cameras testifying on capitol hill friday. behind closed doors, he answered lawmakers' questions about the deadly attack on the

u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. >> general petraeus's briefing was comprehensive. i think it was in -- added to our ability to make judgments about what is clearly a failure of intelligence. >> reporter: petraeus told lawmakers he believed all along terrorists carried out the attack that killed u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. >> the original talking points prepared by the cia were different from the ones that were finally put out. >> reporter: lawmakers are trying to sort out what the obama administration knew and understand why five days after the attack, u.n. ambassador susan rice was talking about a spontaneous protest. democrats who listened to petraeus testify were quick to defend rice. >> she used the unclassified talking points that were signed off on by the entire intelligence community. so criticisms of her are

completely unwarranted. >> reporter: in both hearings friday, petraeus addressed his resignation because of an affair with his biographer paula broadwell. lawmakers said the former cia director apologized and assured them his personal situation had no bearing on the benghazi investigation. general petraeus testified that there was no political motive behind leaving al qaeda out of the talking points. on capitol hill, danielle nottingham, cbs 5. israel is apparently preparing for an escalation of its military operation against hamas in the gaza strip. troops and armored vehicles are gathering on the border and 16,000 israeli reservests have called up. the defense minister is mobilizing as many as 75,000 more. this comes as hamas launched rockets at jerusalem. ken bastida has more. dozens are protesting the violence in the middle east.

>> reporter: we're on the 600 block of montgomery downtown. there are hundreds of people down here protesting the situation in the middle east right now. on one side of the street, you're looking at right now the pro-palestinian side. they are out in front of the israeli consulate. and on the other side of the street is the pro-israeli side, much smaller group of people. and they continue to shout back and forth on montgomery street here. i talked to one demonstrator who says he realizes the shooting is going back and forth it's just not right. >> they are firing back and forth. but the palestinians aim at the soldiers whereas israelis aim at the children in gaza. that's unacceptable. >> reporter: it's the second demonstration we have seen in downtown san francisco in as many days. very disruptive on this friday afternoon especially for motorists because they have montgomery down to just one lane. there's a lot of people walking out here. there are also a lot of san

francisco police officers out here tonight but they say the situation while very noisy is pretty calm. in downtown san francisco, ken bastida in mobile5. a cutting torch is blamed for igniting an oil platform explosion in the gulf of mexico. this happened about 25 miles southeast of grand isle, louisiana. at least 2 people were killed, 4 others hurt. 2 people are now missing. the coast guard says only a small amount of oil spilled from the platform. and we're learning more about the accident that killed four veterans when a train collided with their parade float in midland texas. the train was going 60 miles per hour at the time of the collision according to the ntsb. a marine and three soldiers were killed. they were all wounded veterans. 16 others were hurt. a dinner at an upscale steakhouse ends with a wanted bay area gangster going to the big house. cbs 5 reporter da lin tells us how an alert off-duty officer helped nab a dangerous suspect.

>> reporter: what was supposed to be a romantic birthday dinner for an off-duty oakland police officer turned into a crime-fighting date involving a most wanted fugitive. oakland police say this man, 20- year-old ronnie flenaugh had been on the run for six months. >> he was my number one target in east oakland. >> reporter: in fact, just an hour before the arrest in san francisco, oakland police flew out to las vegas and raided a home where they thought flenaugh was hiding. he wasn't there. instead, he and a big group of people walked into ruth's chris steakhouse in san francisco. that was where off duty oakland police officer ernesto lay was celebrating his wife's birthday. >> what drew the attention to the off-duty officer is that a gentleman walked in with a hooded sweatshirt over his head, a baseball cap pulled down low, and a sweatshirt around his face. >> reporter: the oakland officer recognized flenaugh called for backup and waited for the group to eat their dinner. as they walked out, armed officers surrounded them.

police say he is the head of a very violent east oakland gang. investigators linked him to countless armed robberies and shootings in oakland and surrounding cities. >> we could say without a doubt that there are murders that can be attributed to mr. flenaugh. >> reporter: they said his gang had a number of shootouts with rival gangs in east oakland. >> one of the retaliatory shootings mr. flenaugh's wife was shot eight times while she sat in front of a school picking up her children after school in broad daylight. >> reporter: the shooting happened more than a month ago. his wife survived her injuries but that was another example of how dangerous these people are. police said the shooter opened fire in front of children and parents. so police are glad that flenaugh is in custody. >> we are hoping his arrest can squash some of the ongoing retaliatory issues that are happening. >> reporter: da lin, cbs 5. >> afternoon snacks with a jolt everything from crackerjacks to

insist are not related to their products, some wonder if jacked up snacks are the way to go. >> i wouldn't want a product with it in it. >> reporter: dr. kim mulvihill cbs 5 healthwatch. >> i'm always looking for something to bring me down. the adrenaline is usually pumping. >> chamomile tea in jellybeans. >> they will figure that out. tell you what's coming down now, rainfall, a lot of rainfall. it depends where you are. very interesting setup. let me show you hi-def doppler. look at san jose. if you are watching in san jose, rain, what rain? you have the santa cruz mountains just down to your south and west and that's putting up a wall in the atmosphere preventing that rain from making it to you. where we do not have that wall, which is the rest of the bay area, it is soggy and very soggy right now in portions of marin county. in a matter of just about two or three minutes, it will be raining a lot more intensely in san rafael and tiburon already seeing some of that heavier rainfall for mill valley. portions of san francisco and the peninsula south to daly city the bayview district

getting heavy rainfall and farther north towards saint helenena, santa rosa, healdsburg, you're picking up steady rainfall, as well. i'm showing you these areas in the north because down towards san jose, hayward, union city, not much rain. it's raining on the bay bridge now with temperatures around 60. oakland at 60, san jose 63. santa rosa 55. here's the setup. that low pressure area that we have been watching for three or four straight days is now making an approach toward the bay area. you can see it right here. and it's moving in our general direction. as it does, the rain will pick up in coverage and intensity tonight and early tomorrow. so i think the wettest period is going to be from now to 7:00 or 8:00 tomorrow morning. then that moves through but we have one more rainmaker to talk about. a cold front will get here saturday night, sunday morning. once this front moves south of the bay area, which will happen on sunday afternoon, i think you get some nice weather to get outside so if you want to get outside maybe play nine holes at your favorite golf course or 18 or 27, do it on sunday afternoon. that likely will be the driest part of the weekend. let's talk specifics now with
